    There are three versions as to how U of Cincinnati earned the nickname "Bearcats". One is that a lineman Leonard K. "Teddy" Baehr prompted the nickname in 1915. Fans would call him "Baehr cat." Another is that a sports cartoon depicting a bear-like, cat-like animal harassing a wildcat, following the 1914 Cincinnati-Kentucky game. The third version goes back to 1912, where a newspaper account of a Cincinnati game in which the sports editor said "the team played like bearcats." The nickname didn't catch on until 1922. Students wondered what a bearcat really was. The response was that it was a fictitious symbol of spirit, blending the intellect of a cat and the strength of a bear.
