TaylorMade Wedges Overview
Not so long ago, golfers didn’t look far beyond loft and perhaps bounce angle when choosing their wedges. Nowadays, thanks to innovators like TaylorMade, wedges are as sophisticated as any club in the bag.
TaylorMade wedges offer all manner of special features and customizable options. For instance, you might choose between chrome, copper, nickel or black finishes, while most models come in multiple bounce options for each different loft. (Example: a 56° wedge may be available with 10°, 12° or 14° of bounce). Clubheads are precision milled for unwavering consistency; grooves are sharply etched for optimal spin; and some clubfaces boast a “raw” surface to further boost spin rates.
No matter your skill level, appearance preferences or even the types of courses you play, TaylorMade has a wedge to fit your needs. In fact, you may want to go with a full TaylorMade wedge set rather than mixing and matching different brands and models.
Here’s a look at the company’s most recent wedges, which you’ll find in both new and used versions here at GlobalGolf:
TaylorMade Hi-Toe Wedges
The name says it all. TaylorMade’s
feature an expanded, higher toe area for greater forgiveness on miss-hits and, especially, improved performance from the rough. Lofts range from 50° to 64°, with full-face scoring lines (which run the entire width of the clubface) in the higher-lofted clubs and conventional grooves on lower lofts. Sole grinds – the shape and depth of the bottom of the club – also vary between the higher and lower lofts, letting the golfer choose based on his swing path, course conditions and other factors.
TaylorMade Milled Grind 2 Wedges
Milled Grind 2 lineup
(or MG2, for short) up the ante for spin and feel with a rough surface finish and a polyurethane insert in the cavity. The company also touts the MG2 wedges’ “thick-thin” head construction, which optimizes center of gravity location for superior distance and trajectory control.
TaylorMade Milled Grind Wedges
TaylorMade’s crack engineering team pulled out all the stops with the
Milled Grind lineup
(aka MG1). Besides the CNC machine-milled surfaces and sole, TaylorMade MG1 wedges offer up to three bounce options (low, standard and high) per loft; ultra-sharp ZPT-17 grooves; and a weight port for a lower center of gravity, which maxes out backspin and accuracy. The MG1 clubhead, crafted from 8620 carbon steel, is noted for its exceptionally soft feel.
