Ping Golf was founded in 1959 by Karsten Solheim with the intention of creating high quality game-improvement equipment for golfers of all skill levels. From their first Ping 1-A putter to the latest Ping drivers and Ping irons, Ping Golf has made innovation a staple of their existence and considers themselves "an engineering company who puts product development ahead of everything."
Ping holds over 450 patents for their innovations over the years. They are also the only golf company in the US to own and operate their own foundry. Their first patent for the Ping 1-A putter, with its heel- and toe-weighted clubhead, laid the foundation for perimeter weighting in clubheads. Solheim later invented perimeter weighted irons after an idea he had based on the physics of tennis racket performance—namely, that the weight along the edges of the club would prevent the club face from twisting on impact, making mis-hits less costly. The idea of "forgiveness" in golf clubs stems from this simple yet revolutionary idea. Ping also pioneered their color-coded golf club fitting and customization method, which has made Ping Golf one of the most golfer-friendly companies in the industry.
