About Callaway Golf Clubs
It’s hard to believe, but Callaway Golf, the company behind the groundbreaking Big Bertha driver, started out making
hickory-shafted golf clubs less than 10 years prior.
Ely Callaway, an avid golfer who had just sold his vineyard for a tidy profit, purchased half of a company called
Hickory Sticks USA in 1982. He bought it outright in 1984, changed the name to Callaway Golf in 1988 and proceeded
to change the equipment industry forever.
Introduced in 1991, the original Big Bertha signaled a shift toward bigger clubheads. The Big Bertha driver swelled
from 190cc (cubic centimeters) to 290cc in 1997; in 2005, 460cc drivers would become the norm.
Callaway Golf’s impact extends far beyond the driver category. Callaway golf balls, metal woods, hybrids, irons and
wedges sell in vast numbers worldwide. The company also owns Odyssey Putters and the iconic Ben Hogan brand.
Ever innovative, Callaway Golf equipment manufacturer to use AI (artificial intelligence) in designing golf clubs.
Its past and recent representatives read like a who’s-who of professional golf -- Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson,
John Rahm and Annika Sorenstam are just some of the greats who’ve played with Callaway golf clubs.
