    The golf polo shirt owes its popularity among golfers to the dress codes maintained by many golf courses, which requires that men wear a collared shirt in order to play.

    This likely dates back to the early days of modern golf, when men would wear a shirt, tie, and jacket to play. (Women of the times who chose to play typically wore dresses while playing.)
