Prior to 1923, Wake Forest University had been known as the "Baptists" and "The Old Gold & Black". In 1923, the "Demon Deacons" emerged for the first time, referring to the football team and their "devilish" play and fighting spirit. In 1941, it was a late-night fraternity joke and an old tuxedo that brought the Deacon symbol to life. Jack Baldwin, on a dare from his fraternity, dressed in a tuxedo and rode the North Carolina ram mascot to lead the team onto the field. That crazy stunt now stands as a proud "Demon Deacon" tradition, and today, the unique nickname holds special meaning for all Wake Forest fans. |
