| The Cavaliers and Wahoos are two nicknames associated with the University of Virginia. The media more often uses "Cavaliers", while Wahoos is a favorite with the students and fans. Cavaliers, the official nickname for Virginia athletics, is derived from the "Cavalier Song" by Lawrence Lee, Jr. class of '24. In 1963, the University mascot became a barefaced horseback rider in Cavalier garb. The mounted Cavalier and his horse parted company in 1974 with the inception of AstroTurf at Scott Stadium. From 1974 to 1982, the Cavalier performed on foot. The "Hoo", an orange-costumed mascot, made a brief appearance in 1983 but did not capture the support of the student body. The costumed Cavalier with a large character head debuted the following football season in 1984 and has remained the official mascot of the University. |
