| Texas A&M University adopted the name "Aggies" in the early 1900's due to the university's involvement with the teaching of agriculture. Texas A&M originated as a military institution and consisted entirely of an A&M Corps of Cadets until 1963. In 1931, the first mascot, a little black and white dog, was adopted by the students and named "Reveille". The present "Reveille" is a full bred American collie. In 1938, "Old Sarge" was created by A&M student, Howard Tumlinson, as a symbol of Texas A&M. His image is often alongside the "Aggie" name. Texas A&M University's "Old Sarge" is one part of a long and rich tradition of Texas A&M University. |
