    In 1972, after a six month campaign with input from The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni, students and faculty, five finalist out of 400 suggestions were voted on. The Five finalist included Golden Eagles, Golden Raiders, Southerners, Timber wolves and Warlords. Student Michael Ferall who was awarded a $100 scholarship submitted Golden Eagles, the winning suggestion.
