| The state of Minnesota acquired the name the "Gophers State" in 1858, as a result of a political cartoon. In the early 1930's, the University of Minnesota's football teams were described as the "golden-shirted horde" and the "golden swarm" because they wore new golden-colored jerseys. This trait, combined with the nickname "Gophers", created the famed nickname the "Golden Gophers." |
