Iowa State University earned the "Cyclone" name in 1895, when ISU, a heavy underdog, beat Northwestern's football team 36-0. During this time, storms known as "cyclones" were wreaking havoc on the state of Iowa. After the ISU victory, The Chicago Tribune ran a story with the headline, "Iowa Cyclone Devastates Evanstontown". If the weather forecasters had known then what they know now, ISU athletic teams should technically have been called the "Tornadoes"! |
