The Colorado University live buffalo is one of the most unique mascots in intercollegiate athletics. In 1966, the original "Ralphie" made his CU debut. The mascot was originally named "Ralph" by the student body. Soon after, the name was changed to "Ralphie", when it was discovered that "Ralph" was a female. The current mascot, "Ralphie IV," weighs in at 1,200 pounds and can reach speeds up to 25 m.p.h. Today's "Ralphie IV" can be seen leading the CU football team onto the field and represents all Colorado University athletics. Courtesy of the University Archives. |
